DNN: The CMS Formerly Known As...

You are here

A look at the long established content management system.

If you've worked with the internet for over a decade (like some of us at Contact Media Ventures have), chances are you may remember an open source CMS known as DotNetNuke. Today, it is known by abbreviation as DNN. Its roots date from August 2001 with the release of the IBuySpy Portal. In February 2003, it was rebranded as DotNetNuke. The reason behind its name change was its back end architecture, being based on Microsoft .NET technologies. Version 01.00.05 was released on the 23 March 2003.

By September 2006, the DotNetNuke Corporation was formed, ensuring the community's future. Major changes would include a Partner Program, a partnership with Telerik, and a Professional Edition. Launched on 09 March 2010, this introduced a subscription model for commercial clients. An Enterprise Edition would follow on the 12 July 2011. With DotNetNuke also being known as DNN by some users, it officially became known as DNN on the 09 July 2013.

Today, its CMSs come under the banner of Evoq, powered by the belly and guts of DNN. There is now Evoq Community, Evoq Content, Evoq in the Cloud, and Evoq Social. It has gone from strength to strength and is among the Top Ten CMSs in terms of popularity and usability.
